December 2, 2012 A walk in the Forest

The concept for this project derived from oriental art. If we look at the Asian folk art, we will find similar technique of layering, I.e. the Japanese cut art, the Chinese mask and even the one that close to home, the shadow puppet a.k.a wayang kulit. It a wonderful platform to work from, by combining this with current technology with LED lighting and a simple white color surfaces to disperse and reflect the light color we have a magical recipe.

This bar is placed in an iconic view, thus the story line inside the shadow box in front of the bar will have to be equally powerful and along come the idea of ‘walking on the forest’. We are drawn right away to the idea of having lots of animal in the mixed within the forest idea on the riverbank and mountain backdrop.

This a modular system bar and can be adjusted to accommodate need of my client. It has 8 shadow boxes that could be configured in to a single large bar or a few smaller units.

The motif of the stool were derived from Oriental lattice pattern which give a delicate quality to balance the hardness of the material. The pattern itself one of them is created from repetition of the exact same size circle

The pattern itself one of them is created from repetition of the exact same size circle and another one is outlining the shapes of the stool.I believe in this idea of broken symmetry, I found that we as human always has been appeal to symmetry and it plays a role in our sense of beauty. However perfect symmetry is repetitive and predictable and our mind also like surprises and so we often consider imperfect symmetry to be more beautiful. The stool however is a perfect combination as it is perfectly symmetry on daytime and can be used as stool or backdrop. Come night time, the way the LED light sources cast and distort shadow and shapes create the illusion of a perfect broken symmetry. The RGB LEDs give options to various ambiance, warmth, cool, soothing to name a few and enable possibility to cater for various requests
